Six Year Old Raises Money for Haiti

OXFORD – Six year old Madison Gordon had a big idea: raise money to help the people in Haiti fix their homes. (See front page, February 11, 2010.) At six, money is money. However, to the adult world what Madison has accomplished, is quite remarkable. To date, she has raised $250 all by herself through “cleaning” the homes of friends and relatives to drawing pictures that she then sold.

“I cleaned my Auntie's house,” explained Madison, “it was really a mess!”

Madison also drew a bunch of pictures and when her Step-grandmother, Honey, told coworkers at Sabre Yachts, South Casco, about Madison's determination to raise money, they invited Madison to bring them over.

So Madison set out with her drawings (and her mom) and arrived at Sabre Yachts. Within a short while she had sold all her drawings. In fact, so many employees wanted to buy them that they had to use a photo copier to make enough copies to keep up with demand.

And then just last week a letter, postmarked Englewood, Florida, arrived at the Advertiser Democrat offices. Inside, attached to a card, was a sticky note – “Please see that Madison Gordon gets this....Ms. Lorraine Harmon.” Inside the card was a check for $25.

Apparently, Madison's story was read by Ms. Harmon in Florida and touched her enough to send Madison a generous contribution.

Then, on March 1, Madison received a letter from Maine State Senator David Hastings III saying her had read the article in the Advertiser Democrat. He congratulated her and invited her to visit the capital and State House.

Madison's funds will be added to those of all the SAD 17 schools' fund raising efforts and sent on to help the Haitians.
